Wisconsin Fall Day Trip from the Twin Cities

Our favorite family activity every autumn is to go on a Fall Drive. Skirting along the bluffs of the Mississippi River, and through the rolling hills of Wisconsin we visit; cheese factories, apple orchards, and pumpkin patches.

GOLDEN GUIDES ITINERARY

1. Leisen Family Farm, River Falls, WI

Hop on the wagon to the pumpkin patch, pick out some fun gourds, and enjoy a bevy of family activities.

2. Cady Cheese Factory, Wilson, WI

I think they have the BEST cheese curds. They are sold off the counter, not in the refrigerator, this is important and when you bite into them they squeak. That’s how you know they’re fresh.

3. Maple Leaf Orchard, Spring Valley, WI

You can take a wagon out to the orchard to pick apples or choose from a variety already picked. They also have pumpkins, cider, and fall produce.

4. Stockholm, WI

We head toward the Mississippi River and stop in Stockholm, a darling town with shops and restaurants. We must get a pie from Stockholm Pie Company and browse The Palate, a French-inspired store with gourmet food, wine, and gifts.

5. Nelson Cheese Factory, Nelson, WI

In an old stone building that feels like you stepped into an Italian Villa, you’ll find an astonishing selection of local cheese as well as everything you would need for a charcuterie board or picnic. They also have a deli, with sandwiches, pizza wine, and ice cream.

6. The Stone Barn, Nelson, WI

This pizza farm in the middle of nowhere has the best wood-fired pizzas. Place your order, grab a beer, find a table outside, and enjoy the warmth of the fall sun and the views of the hills; the perfect way to end our day. Read our full review of the Stone Barn restaurant here.
